the prelude to week 9...
week 8: librarythangs...
but i did search the list of books for my interest areas, and the collection isn't built up to garner much of my attention. in fact, i own all the books that came up for pidgin and hawai`i. but i am sure this will indeed be useful, when i narrow my focus in the future.
it's a nice web of where to go next. remember those choose your adventure books growing up? this is it in adult form in a sense. it allows you a variety of choices to weave through. sort of like that part of reading rainbow. well, it actually is, with kids recommending books. a not so for profit amazon of serious recs for serious readers. you'll know when i drop books, cause i'll flood it with hawai`i related readings. ya heard?!
week 8: word processing units...
anyways, I have used the google docs from time to time, when syntax and such was necessary, which, with my own admitted lexicon, isn't very often. long time, i wen research pidgin. and how can research em if no live um. an den if i live um an den use um an den wot? buggah going be all red! so no need da kine spell check.
but seriously, misspelled words add character and in my area of research, the application of the jargon wouldn't register with the online dictionary and i would probably get annoyed by the computer's insistence i was wrong.
with that said about my apprehension to use the program, it is yet another way of being mobile. creating, storing and sharing documents completely online. again, it's not that i don't endorse use, i use it, as well as yahoo's similar briefcase and folders option (minus the spell check tho i believe i haven't checked it, so who knows maybe stay a'ready), it's just not applicable at points.
fyi: i am waiting for something with `Olelo Hawai`i!

Reciprocal DeMEANors: Mediating a Changing of Tides in Access Services
Liberals-Conservatives
Left-Right
North-South
Even-Odd
West-East
University-Public
Polarity. Repulsion. University vs Public. Honestly, i'm not IT, so the issues were not primarily born out of the financial difference. sure, they get paid big bucks (btw those comcast commercials ie save moolah are pretty ridunkulous), but i ain't even trippin'. but as everything is connected money plays a part. imho, i think with the city dropping so much cash on wages they really got their ears to the floor and hand on the whip ready to spank those out of line. and that's the problem, big brother is always watching for them. or as i initially called it, the Patriarch. to me it's that general lack of trust of the staff, that each part of their day is scheduled and monitored. and its not exactly our peers in AS, its top down and i can only assumed somewere scared into submission. i'm not saying we in the u are all gravy, we need to get our work done, but it's a liberal, trusting leadership that allows us to go home leaving work and work related stress at work. in reality it's this conservative approach vs the liberal mentality of the u, that spurned the clash. it's also why i don't trip about the payscale, because i am glad i have that umbrella of the U around me. anyways, i fought the fight because i did't want to run or submit without a fight.
you know this is a bunch of rambling, but it needed to get out. i think when beth asked the dean and director what the trouble of having a joint library, they sugar coated a lot because they could hide in their offices and make phone calls to get doantions. they didnt live in a true merge atmosphere and they still don't. they can pick and choose their "joint" we just have smoke what we got.

RUSs feeds revisited...
©ollectanea which is a copyright blog
and
Hawaiian Independence Blog which is what it says it is.
I think my primary apprehension was the fact I had to re-sign on into yet another log-in field for yet another website, it's kinda calming that it's built in. Unfortunately, like I said, it's slow as slugs.

wookie?
No, I'm serious. I have commited myself to bringing both Hamilton King Way Yeh and Chew-Becky Taylor together. And because as a friend and a former supervisor to them both, I am asking for any piece of useful advice from would-be cupids out in cyber world to help me hook these two up. Hamilton is a former student assistant for Course Reserves and Becky is a current Student Assistant for Randy. Yes, they both worked at the same time and are actually good friends. In confidence, Becky actually admitted to liking King Way, but she was insistent that it would not work out, because of Hamilton's fascination with older women with kids. Yes, Hamilton loves them MILFS. Becky is actually about 10 years his younger, and hairy all over. But seriously, they fill each other's missing pieces and I think both should own up to that love. I won't stop until they hold hands down the aisle.
So, I am begging any of you out there. any advice?
Week se7en: the library wiki....
I mean, for the most part I didn't lie. I really do like McDonald's, tho my wife and I have made a choice to give it up for Lent. I do eat Fish and Poi when I can. I could have put pipikaula as well . And I do have the bodyboarding movie, The Untouchables, on repeat on the vcr when I'm home alone. It's a vhs tape and i kept my vcr primarily because of this movie. I ain't exactly hi tech, so I don't exactly know how to convert it to dvd yet (it's not available on any other format and it's out of print to boot). Reminds me that I should ask Mike on a day he's here on the how-to's of video conversion.
My nephews love the Wiggles and hearing the Wiggles reminds me of them:

"...and they were blue badababa, and red badababa and yellow badababa and moonface too..."
actually the line really ends "and purple too!" but one of Oomba's many nicknames is Moonface, so we threw it in there to make him smile as well.

oh! and furthermore, on my vacation in March, aside from the Fred Hall Fishing and Boating Show in Long Biotch, I am also going to take my nephews to the Wiggles Show at Universal Studios. So there!
But I did post seriously. Kamau and, to an extent the follow-up, Kamau A`e by Alani Apio, is a pair of screenplays from Kumu Kahua theatre that I do recommend. It involves the identity formation of young Hawaiians in Modern Hawai`i. And seriously, there are definitely more books (and other Favorites) out there that I could have flooded the pages with (funny thing is I do have an extensive personal library of Hawai`i material but since working here I hate books), but rather than dominate any of the pages, I let the talkers talk... cyberly of course.

Week 6: the phuture of libraries...
The San Jose State University Library strives to meet the learning and information needs of the San Jose State University Community of Students, Faculty and Staff and contribute in a joint involvement as a participant in the lifelong learning of the surrounding Community in conjunction with the City of San Jose. In redefining the library as a Learning Information Space, we construct a user-centric atmosphere by providing choices for the patron in developing their own learning processes and provide the support necessary for the patron to navigate their own learning terrain. We also commit to expanding and implementing the tools and technology necessary to facilitate the learning process.
Week #7:Weaki
btw it's the current fave amongst sloths in the 33 year old demographic.
Walter Ritte
Here's a link to a Hana Hou magazine article about Walter Ritte sent to me by a friend.
I didn't really "learn" Hawaiian history until sometime before graduating High School on the mainland. Not for class even. Sure, I learned about King Kamehameha and then Queen Liliu`okalani, and the ahupua`a system and fun games and the Hawaiian names for the fish and animals, but I never really learned Hawaiian history.
It was just reading actually. Most Local people (the ones who don't see living on the mainland as "escaping the rock") hunger for things Hawaiian. They'll frequent the "Hawai`i" stores. They'll eat at places selling plate lunches. They'll join hula halau. They'll paddle. Me? I just read.
I stumbled across the name Walter Ritte, shortly after reading about George Helm, Jr. and the PKO. PKO: Protect Kaho`olawe `Ohana. George Helm, Jr.'s was a story of sacrifice, a sacrifice for who and what I am today.
I stumbled across the name Walter Ritte in trying to define myself. He may or may not represent you, but he sees the world in a way I only can wish -- a true Hawaiian. The quote below isn't from the article, but it is purely Walter. In context, it refers to a fight in Hawai`i (specifically Moloka`i) in which a plot of land was allocated to builders in order to build condos. In an attempt to quiet the discontent, the planners which include the Office of Hawaiian Affairs (`AUE!) tried to trade land for land:

"Give up your daughter to save the family -- let her be a whore. That doesn't sell on Molokai. That's basically what the deal is," Ritte said. "We're not going to give up anybody in our family. We need the whole family to survive."

Hanabata dayz. (work in progress)

no matta but, we still had fun. if the surf was small, we skim on our boogie boards or just swim around play tag in the water. if no mo fish, we still playing football in the sand, with whaterever can be football while we waiting.
Us guys, we was locals at `ewa beach beach park. all the old man guys knew us, even tho we live twenty minutes bike ride from the beach. they call us nicknames that we never like. me i was kojak or kikaida. i like kikaida cuz he was the action hero, but kojak stuck more. my mom dem used to shave my head all the time so i was bolohead growing up. the name was ok tho cuz they sometimes gave me sees butterscotch lollipop when they see me. all the old tutu ladies knew us too. we was the nice but kolohe kids who no cause too much trouble. they gave us limu for give our moms after they finish picking if we help carry the bags for them to the bus stop. the tough guys too left us alone but we know they watching over us. my fadda was old time HB, so they knew him and knew my fadda no like us run around making da kine, so they made sure other guys left us alone to play freeze tag and no bodda us. they gave us high fives when they saw us but nothing else, but thats ok. they never make trouble wit us even tho one time jim jim when throw the football so hard went thru my hand and knock over their heinekin in the sand. we never run cauase we were scared shitless, andthey make fake like fight but then they laughed and said "no get stupid." we was lucky to be considered panty by these guys.
`ilima time, we used to cruise by the bathrooms and we knew the big kids smoking pakalolo. we used to catch wiffs outside and make fake kine high. One time, Jim Jim wrote his name big kine on the showers wall. "Jimmy Boy Stay Hea." black marker. after the thing stay up for two weeks, we all wen write our names. one of the big mokes, my cousin's friend ben came by us after me and russell left church and said, "what you guys one gang now? what you like beef wit us now?" lucky ting he was joking but. we wasn't a gang tho, but look like. we always together but only eric who was haole was big so we far from scary looking. even tho most of us surfed alot too, we still look pretty small too. so even tho ben was joking, we got scared cuz we never like beef with nobody local around here. (tourist people was another story). so the next time we went out to the beach which was the next day we came out and crossed our names on the wall. Michael, probably the nicest guy out all us, even wrote a small kine sorry and said we not one gang.
Used to be, the big guys never said more than a word to us. was always howzit or give me hi5, small kine stuff. the day after we crossed out our names, we peddled our bikes to the basketball court to scout the surf. was small but would be good fun. all of a sudden three guys came up to us and they looked huhu about something. michael conveniently hid himself in the middle of our pack so we would shield him i guess. anyways, one of the guys was ben. he went church every sunday, dress nice even, but all us kids knew even at church no make a in front of ben. so he came up to us and told us straight, "eh who bodda-in' you guys?" we was like "huh?" and they went ballistics tellin us, nobody going mess wit us guys so no worry. anyways, ben finally wen say "eh jimmy who wen cross your name?" none of us laughed but we wanted to. after we told them, they did.
jim jim moved a couple months after that. me too. we both still came back every summer to stay with my aunty. every summer even tho we had cars even, we still cruised beach park. the old guys still remembered us, even the tutu ladies even tho no more limu they remembered. most of the moke guys grew up or got arrested. but sundays, mike said they still go beach park and drink brews. so we went a couple of sundays ago and saw ben still with his cronies hogging the mic of the portable karaoke machine. when he saw us he laughed and said the "not one gang" is back.

reserves are sloths.

Admittedly, being a muckraker is definitely tiring business. not exactly intentional, tho i suppose a good portion of my defiance is born out of being a bit delusional. someone's out to get get me right, connie? i was the man of signs and flyers expressing dissatisfaction and the longing for the days of clark. i remember walking into the sort room and then walking right out. i remember just shelving UNIVERSITY books. but i've grown somewhat out of all the initial conflicts. refocused a lot of my energies at more specific enemies. sure, the fun police is still there, and i am sure somebody's got voodoo dolls of me (like the admin secretary) but heck, i've accepted that fact and well, if i survived the first years of king being targetted as PUBLIC enemy number 2 (i figure one of the student assistants would have been number 1), then i learned to just keep on keeping on. its really not worth the trouble really. if someone's got it out for me, well it's easy to get me. the geniuses who planned this crap situated our computers on our desks so that our back is to the doorway. great job guys! well, if i have a target on my back there you go brutus. thankfully, connie left her chair, no actually it's a throne, and combined with my relaxed slouching sitting position i'm able to hide somewhat. but i still beckon those who want to try.
and yet despite all that carp slinging i get my job done. not pretty and definitely not very organized (heck i know where everything is-- i just can't tell you where it is) but spring 2007 reserves processing rush is primarily in the books as yet another successful notch on the pseudo-wood desks. well, not really (thanks a lot sPam) due to an inter-office envelope that spurs bad thoughts in my mind. yet despite a few missteps (heck it was the first time my only support was primarily from an assigned student assistant), we killed it.
anyways in return, the last couple of days i've been slothing it. (picture of me above courtesy of texas.edu) i freely admit it too. actually, i did work on some strategic planning reading and turned in a couple of travel requests and paged and process quite a few course reserves including scanning items for professor grindstaff who likes to pile on the e-reserves materials. darn, recollecting over the past two and one half days it sure doesn't seem like i'm slothing it at all. i guess my chillaxed (my wife hates that word) style confuses me as well. which ultimately ties into a word of warning to those in my past that have misinterpreted me: my silky transitions and my efficiency combine with my in depth knowledge of my job completes a robotic me that oozes smoothness unseen by human eyes. yet the anti-fun library police with their archaeic strict rules born out of conservative 1950's values continue to misrepresent me as an enemy. they are so anti-sloth, they need a beer or some sort of barbituates before they get a brain fart and actually act on it. afterall, i am protected by the humane society and a bunch of peta-like groups. lol.

Experiment #6: Not so del.icio.us...
i prefer not to utilize this technology on mines, tho i put tags on my blogs. heck most of the blog tags make no sense anyways -- smurfs? besides, i'd rather have people stumble upon my blog like hansel and gretel than follow a tailored path to manoa falls. reason being: i'm a witch in my candy cane house and i like to people human flesh and it's much easier to surprise prey than let people know its a tourist trap.
on a side note: is anyone out there alarmed at all the gadgets anddoo-hickeys we've been subscribing/signing up to? sure flickr may be (maybe) used in the future but as if i didn't have enough spam in my email (and a student assistant named sPam), we are virtually (pun intended) granting these gobots permission to further flood me with an onslaught (of what i gather to be) korean sex and mortgage companies.

ERROR!

ok. i censored myself. sort of. there were once upon a time two error messages that appeared. the one i erased was pretty evil (funny but evil). so i took that suckah off. you know why? i control images. anyways, it doesn't really matter, i got that sucker saved on my desktop. warning to folks. don't tick me off, or i'll post it on your site.
Wk5: Roll yo' Rollyo
i'm an un-interesting fellow from the dry lands of pu`uloa on the island of o`ahu. i surf only a handful of websites that, me being the courteous fellow that i am, wouldn't want to bore you with. who, in their right mind, would want to read endless reports on fishing tackle (not fish or their environment but fishing gear) and hawai`i socio-politics? would put any sane man to sleep. so, i didn't expand the rollyo thing too much. search here or the web. or at least the web. when i tried to fiddle with searching my blog i think snails travel at a faster pace.
on another note...
I've heard these pansies were looking for me...
My Morning of Discontent -- Taro-ist in the Library.

Dear Admin,
Despite my futile attempts to avoid ravenous paparazzi and their camera utensils, my bigfoot-esque mug has been captured time and time again. Ugly, mind you (what was my wife thinking?), but quite memorable. In my childhood, Ponce De Leon happened to visit me in a cloudy medicinal-induced dreamstate and shared with me the secret to eternal youth. To the delight of my wife, nothing much has changed albeit I sworn off the kojak stylings for long shiny dark well-conditioned brunette locks. True story.
Anyways, I've worked for the University library for nearly five years, which ultimately means that I've been a mainstay before the San Jose Public Library SJSUniversity Branch: King Library II opened. Yet, this morning, as I seeked to be pro-active and get the paperwork okay-ed from Aggie, I was denied entrance into the 4th floor office because the receptionist didn't know me. Last I checked, a suit and tie wasn't required, but I suppose Jeans and a sweatshirt had me flagged as an anti-library taro-ist. (FYI, I am a taro-ist. Eat Poi.)
I know, I know, I should be thanking her for setting me straight-- why would any real worker want to hang out with those elitist goons? --but, unfortunately, the obvious benefits of not having to see them does not outweight the dire consequences of messing up my paperwork and thus feeling the wrath of disappointing Aggie. Heck, I actually think a few of them 4th floor folks are A-OK (did I just admit to that?). So, I implore you Admin, know my face, so I won't have to take the elevator back down only to get my card key and take the backroads (with Mac and Mutley) thru the Staff Lounge.
btw, I'm the Yeti aka Sasquatch holding the Ukulele (not ukelele) up front.
Love,
Neil.

Week 5/Tenth thing: Aa CcRrYy fOoRr4 KkoOkKUuAa!

Too bad no can embed the map into my blog page, seems appropriate as I head into a week of meetings, dr appointments and crummy exercises. If you look closely, I approximated where in the library (from or in hell?) Course Reserves is.
I wanted to do the Hula Generator one, so I can mock the misappropriation of Hawaiiana culture yet again, but I guess that link is dead. Hopefully, it was done in by a friend of mines who feels the same as me that the Tourist industry (hotels included) and the Military powers do more harm than good for ka `Aina and ke Kai, not to mention ka Poe. Sell Hawaiian Culture but sell out Hawaiians in the process!
okay, a little sidetracked. click the button, bizzatches!

weak 4 topical itch # 9
In my continued search for the ever-elusive Rodents of Unusual Size, I elected to use a number of the search engines I had at my disposal. Two in particular -- Feedster and Technorati -- offered Google-esque searching, enabling to breeze thru. Easy enough. I've used Technorati before to scour the world of blogs in search of pirated porn. (Now are you paying attention?) Oh well, RoUS searches found me beavers (pun intended), mice, shrews, and more beavers, but not the capybara I was indeed looking for. Maybe, it was there in the results, but I would have to filter thru all the biological mumbo jumbo to get to it.truthfully, i searched for Hawai`i feeds. found a few, but as U2 said, I still haven't found what I am looking for.
cheeze, bi-otch.
